Subject: Irish Rail and the Breaches

The most recent contact between Irish Rail and the Newcastle Residents Association was yesterday. The Engineering Department have studied the existing bridge and have decided that the preferred engineering solution would be to leave the existing foundations but to build a new deck which would incorporate a footbridge for walkers.
Irish rail have been in contact with John Lane of Wicklow County Council and local representatives Derek Mitchell and Tom Fortune. There is no agreement as to who would fund such a new structure. Even if the funding was obtained such a project would have to be tendered etc. Irish Rail do not consider that they can wait until this bridge is rebuilt to put up fencing as the safety issues demand an immediate solution. They propose to go ahead with the fencing but to stop the fencing short of the existing bridge by a couple of meters, install a self closing gate to prevent dogs etc. dashing onto the track, require drivers to slow down and to sound the whistle and to erect signs which warn walkers that they are trespassing onto Irish Rail property.
I will keep you informed of any further developments.
Best Regards,
Miriam Johnston,
Secretary
